College Prep

My approach is holistic: I start by gaining a sense of the student, their goals and interests. From there, I work with them to determine which colleges best fit their academic interests, environmental needs while taking into account any other personal factors. I then help them with the application process, with a focus on what makes them a unique candidate and an emphasis on highlighting that individuality in their essays. I can help them choose a major (for schools that require a major to apply), help gather any documentation they might need, apply to financial aid, filling out various school applications from start to finish (i.e. the Common Application), as well as outlining, drafting, and finalizing any PIQS and personal statements. In addition, I can help source and apply to various scholarships.

I specialize in applying to schools within the California State University and University of California systems and liberal arts schools on the East and West coasts.

Writing

I tutor a wide range of writing needs, from essay writing for college, scholarship and fellowship applications to helping students study for and write their essays for classes.

For college applications, I start with various writing exercises that will help students select and flesh out various aspects of themselves that they would like to focus on for their writing prompts. Next, we will begin to identify and understand what makes a strong answer to PIQ  (personal insight questions), personal statement, or other writing prompts. I guide the student through the rest of the writing process, including outlining, ensuring their writing clearly communicates their main points, to copyediting and checking for grammatical mistakes.

For ongoing writing tutoring, I work with the student to strengthen their ability to build compelling arguments, write outlines with strong thesis statements and relevant evidence from their research, as well as providing grammatical advice.
